Native American Heritage Month at Plains Indians & Pioneers Museum
Friday, November 1, 2019
November marks the start of National Native American Heritage Month. Local renowned Cherokee artist Mary Aitson will have an exhibit of her Cherokee basketry in the Gallery of the Museum. The exhibit will be on display throughout the month of November. In addition to her exhibit, there will be a champagne and chocolate reception in Mary's honor on November 16 from 6-8 pm. The reception is sponsored by the Woodward Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Also, on November 16, Minoma Littlehawk-Sills will be in the Museum from 2-4 pm to present her program, "We Remain." She is a direct descendant of ancestors present at the massacre at Sand Creek, the Washita and the Little Bighorn and is well known throughout the region for her informative and entertaining programs. "We Remain" is being sponsored, in part, through a grant by Oklahoma Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
There will also be a display that examines the horse culture of the Southern Plains Tribes.
