Kevin and Tracy Evans began their journey to inspire a healthier Woodward by opening the Woodward Wellness Center on January 7, 2013.  Kevin, a native of northwest Oklahoma, works tirelessly to help build our youth as Director of Western Plains Youth and Family Services, yet still makes time to live and promote a healthy lifestyle.  Tracy, originally from Woodward, has not only achieved the title of health and fitness guru amongst the community, she is also a celebrity athlete throughout Oklahoma with her gold medal finish in the Oklahoma Memorial Marathon in 2004 and multiple gold medals with the “Oarsome 8” (Woodward’s rowing team) in many rowing competitions.  Together, this power couple has taken their love of health and fitness to the next level by creating one of the best “home away from home” fitness centers in Oklahoma.

To several people, the word “gym” can have a negative connotation.  It can bring on feelings that oppose what a “gym” is supposed to work against…stress, anxiety, and lack of confidence.  As the Woodward Wellness Center does not even use the word “gym” in its name, upon entering the “Center”, you are put at ease with a similar feeling of being “at home”.  While you take in the professional and vast selection of equipment, you are quickly reminded that maybe this is a gym, but a warm greeting from the Owner, herself, and the facility’s design and pristine condition in which everything from the smell in the air to the shine on the equipment is kept, clearly lets you know that this is no ordinary gym!  Even the men and women’s changing rooms provide all you need with showers, tanning and saunas, all of which are included with your membership (single, couple and family memberships are available).

The Woodward Wellness Center offers top of the line equipment - treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, rowers, weight machines, free weights and more.  They also have contact information for personal trainers and provide fitness classes like spinning, rowing, yoga, and strength, not to mention they even have basketball and sand volleyball courts.  The highest attended classes are the Boot Camp (Tracy’s favorite) and the 360 Cardio Blast.  Another favorite of members is the spin class.  If you get a chance to participate in one of these amazing 30 minute classes, you’ll get a great workout and hear some popular phrases that have become synonymous with the Center such as, “You can do anything for a minute!” – Tracy, or “Sit and spin” – Venita McGuire (spin instructor).

The Woodward Wellness Center also promotes a healthy inside as well.  Their Pro-Shop offers healthy food choices and supplements (some not available anywhere else in Woodward) as well as workout apparel to show off the new you.  One of Tracy’s priorities is to ensure that you are wearing the right type of shoe for your workout; teaming up with Brown’s Shoes, a local shoe retailer, to provide member discounts for running shoes.

If you’re still not convinced the Center is different, you might be interested to know that they provide child care to members during their workout sessions.  Krystal Reece, a certified personal trainer and Mom, says that it would’ve made reaching her fitness goals almost impossible without child care.  “We’ve got a great team and provide a separate fun and safe environment for the kids to play, watch a movie or even workout during our specialized kids’ classes,” Tracy says.  This addition not only helps our members, but also creates a stronger sense that the Woodward Wellness Center actually understands the community.

When asked of their favorite thing about the Woodward Wellness Center, we found one common answer...the people.  One member said, “When I started going here, I was nervous to start working out again because I didn’t want to feel like I was being judged. It’s not a good feeling, but it’s something I’ve had to deal with at other gyms.  But, here, it’s different. Even though I've lost weight and feel healthier...I don't even think that's the best part about it...I feel like getting to know Tracy, Venita, and the spin crew is so much more...I've gained family!”
